Most of us know something about spiritual gifts. Paul talks about them frequently in his epistles, though the most comprehensive lists are found in Romans 12 and 1 Corinthians 12 and 14. These are by far not exhaustive lists, but they give us a good picture into what types of gifts are out there. So long as you don’t subscribe to the cessationist view of theology, you probably believe that these gifts are in operation today and that God calls us to use these gifts to build His church, bring others to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, and edify other Christians. Some of the more common gifts we hear referenced today include healing, encouragement, faith, discernment, pastoring, helps, teaching, apostleship, prophecy, mercy, serving, tongues, interpretation, wisdom, miracles, etc.
All of these work together to build the Body of Christ and edify it. Some of them are fairly dissimilar (in fact, they can occasionally seem quite opposite), but they all (hopefully) combine to help foster a harmonious Body.

We live in a world that has increasingly come to idolize trauma. It’s like everybody’s got to have a sob story or an issue – and I suppose we all do. There’s been an increasing emphasis in recent years on mental health – and I think that’s good. But I don’t believe God ever wants us to make trauma our focus.
I’m not negating the fact that you might have gone through trauma in life. I’m not denying your emotions. As a very emotional person myself, I understand how they can affect mental health. But we’re not called to live according to our emotions – or our trauma. When we continually focus on trauma, we actually enable whatever caused that trauma to continue to poison us. |
