We’ve come to the end of our series on the promises to the overcomer! I hope this study has gotten you excited about your faith and excited to partner with Jesus to appropriate these promises on the earth today, as well as one day in Heaven.
This week, I want to look at the seventh and final promise to those of us who overcome the world through our belief in Jesus Christ. It’s another favorite of mine (what can I say – they’re all my favorites!). But this one is particularly moving to me. The very idea kind of makes me a little giddy. The verse is found in Revelation 3:21: “He who overcomes [the world through believing that Jesus is the Son of God], I will grant to him [the privilege] to sit beside Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down beside My Father on His throne.”

We are cruising right through this series! Next week is the last one, and both this week’s post and next week’s touch on some super cool topics. I want to remind you that though some of these promises look like we might have to wait until Heaven to get them, they are available to us right now – it’s just that we have to figure out how to access and appropriate them in the here and now. Ask Holy Spirit how – He is very good at revealing those kinds of things to us!
This week’s verse is found in Revelation 3:12: “He who overcomes [the world through believing that Jesus is the Son of God], I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God; he will most certainly never be put out of it, and I will write on him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem, which descends out of heaven from My God, and My [own] new name.” As we come to the fifth week in our ‘To the Overcomer’ series, we also come to my personal favorite promise. This week’s verse is found in Revelation 3:5:
“He who overcomes [the world through believing that Jesus is the Son of God] will accordingly be dressed in white clothing; and I will never blot out his name from the Book of Life, and I will confess and openly acknowledge his name before My Father and before His angels[saying that he is one of Mine.]” There are three distinct promises contained within this verse. 1) we will be dressed in white clothing, 2) Jesus will never blot out our names from the Book of Life, and 3) He will confess and openly acknowledge our names before the Father and the angels. As we come to Pt. 4 of our series, “To the Overcomer,” we come to another interesting promise. This one is unique among this collection of promises in that it adds a second condition to receiving the blessing. And, like last week, it’s broken into two distinct but equally beautiful parts.
This week’s promise is found in Revelation 2:26-28: “And he who overcomes [the world through believing that Jesus is the Son of God] and he who keeps My deeds [doing the things that please Me] until the [very] end, to him I will give authority and power over the nations; and he shall shepherd and rule them with a rod of iron, as the earthen pots are broken in pieces, as I also have received authority [and power to rule them] from My Father; and I will give him the Morning Star.” In our third installment of our series on overcoming, we’ll look at one of the verses that I have always found especially fascinating. On the surface, it appears to be quite mysterious, but more Scripture study reveals the secrets – and it’s a glorious promise, indeed!
Today’s verse is found in Revelation 2:17: “To him who overcomes [the world through believing that Jesus is the Son of God], to him I will give [the privilege of eating] some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone with a new name engraved on the stone which no one knows except the one who receives it.” This week, we’re going to look at the second promise given to the one who overcomes. It is found in Revelation 2:11 and is a wonderfully life-giving promise. In fact, it will literally save your life – not physically, but spiritually.
“He who overcomes [the world through believing that Jesus is the Son of God] will not be hurt by the second death.” (Rev 2:11) The first question you might be asking is, what is the second death? We all know that we die once. That’s when our physical bodies wear out, and our souls leave the physical and go into the eternal. But there is a second death. It’s the opposite of eternal life, and it’s not something anybody wants to face. We’re back this week with an exciting new series. Over the next few weeks, I want to take a look at several really cool passages of Scripture. This is a series I’ve wanted to do for a while – any time I study the beginning of Revelation, as a matter of fact. I think these passages are easy to overlook because they’re intermixed throughout the messages of Jesus to the angels of the churches. But if you really start to study them, you realize it’s a grave error to overlook them. These amazing promises are all addressed ‘to the one who overcomes…’
First, I want to establish one thing: 1 John 5:4 tells us that everyone born of God overcomes the world. If you have put your faith in Jesus and believe that He is the Son of God and your Savior, you have been born of God. This means that you’ve overcome the world, meaning that you are an overcomer. And that means that all of these wonderful promises are for you! In fact, the Amplified translation (which I will be using throughout this series) spells this out for us. |
