When I was thinking about creating this ministry, I knew I’d have to come up with a name for it. I mean, it was eighteen months since I had graduated with my mass communications and marketing degree – I know all the reasons to have an eyecatching, meaningful name. I prayed long and hard about the right name for this ministry – one that would hint at what the ministry was intended to do and also be catchy and “hip.” (On a side note, I know that God can use whatever He wants – I could have a completely un-marketable name and still be used, but I believe in doing what you can and then letting God take care of the rest!) As I was scanning through an old Rich Mullins album, my eyes lit on the title of the record “Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth.” That got me thinking, and I tentatively named the fledgling ministry “Winds of Heaven,” thinking of Jesus’ words in John 3. “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” – John 3:8
As I busily tried to create a logo for this name (shoutout to Canva!), I couldn’t seem to come up with anything that really hit the heart of what I really wanted to do with this ministry that God had entrusted to me. So, knowing that collaboration is a very important part of the creative process, I showed my designs to my sister. I had kind of misspelled/kind of thought it was cool when I typed “the Wings of Heaven” instead of “the Winds of Heaven.” She saw that and immediately said, “I like that name.” The more I thought about it, the more I began to realize that the name got far better at the heart of the ministry than the one I’d come up with initially. The whole point of this ministry is to give believers the wings to fly high with Jesus. I want to give believers of all ages, but especially young believers, the ability to be all that God has ordained them to be. So many people miss fulfilling their destinies, and this may happen for a myriad of reasons. But if I can help just one person do what God has gifted them to do, it is worth it to me. I believe that we are all missionaries in our lives – ambassadors for Christ in this world. You may be a stay-at-home parent, in the corporate workplace, at school, or in vocational ministry someplace. Wherever you work, let me encourage you: that is your mission field. You carry Jesus into that place, and you are called to represent Jesus there. Ministry doesn’t have to look like raising the dead. That can be a piece of it, but it’s far from the whole gestalt of what ministry is. At its essence, ministry is representing Jesus. But if you want to do that well, you’ve got to first off know Jesus. That’s the goal of the Wings of Heaven. It’s to help you take flight in your relationship with God – to go beyond the ordinary and into a close, intimate relationship with Him. Too many ‘eagles’ are grounded today, bogged down by sin, shame, unbelief, doubt, fear, depression, and the cares of this life. Believers, you weren’t made to be grounded. You were made to fly like an eagle with Jesus. Walking with Him is good; running with Him is good, but how many believers are willing to risk spreading their wings and flying? Take to the skies with Jesus, my friend. He’s given you the wings of heaven!
