Whenever I go through my Spotify Wrapped playlist, I’m always surprised by a few songs that I listened to a lot earlier in the year but kind of forgot about as time went on. But then there are those songs that I carried with me, either for the whole year or discovered partway through the year and somehow have defined this past season. I meant to have this post out a couple of weeks ago, but time got away with me and I wasn’t able to get it finished. So it’s coming in the first week of January, but oh well. With that in mind, I thought I would list my Top 10 songs (in no particular order) that defined 2023 for me. Rest – Amanda CookThis song came out early this year, and from early on, I was obsessed with it. How could I not be when it put me in the right mindset to do the very thing I was desperate to do? I craved rest, and it helped me lay aside everything that was going on and really do that. Joy – Martin SmithThis song hasn’t even been released yet in any official capacity (although there are plenty of fan-made videos from live performances, like the one linked here), but after hearing it at a conference in April, I fell in love! I have often felt as though I didn’t know what tomorrow was going to bring, but I always could cling to the joy of the Lord – which is our strength. Martin has announced that the song will be released sometime early 2024, so I’m excited for the official version! Two Left Feet – LZ7This is just a fun bop that I have played a ridiculous number of times over the last year. I don’t even want to think about how many times (lol). But I think it’s a reminder I needed this year to be spontaneous and fun, never mind that I might have two left feet. Once you get dancing, you totally forget that little fact and enjoy the ride! More – Brandon LakeThis album only came out in the latter half of the year, but I’ve been rocking to the whole thing ever since. I love it, but this is one of my top songs off of the record. It’s been a good reminder: God is MORE than anybody or anything else. More than I could ever be. More faithful than I can understand. More trustworthy. More patient. More gracious. Some days, that’s too easy to forget and this is a great reminder! I Want to Live – SkilletIt’s never been that I don’t want to live, but there are days when I face so much pain that I just want it to go away. Emotional pain. Sometimes physical pain. Sometimes, we all feel trapped by circumstances or mindsets. But the truth is that I want to LIVE. Not just exist or let life slide by while I’m busy doing things. No, I’ve made a choice to live every day like it’s the day God has made (which it is). Nothing New – Brandon LakeThis is the cry of my heart. From the first time I heard this one, I knew it would be something special. And it is oh-so-sweet a melody to sing with reckless abandon. The cry of my heart…”I LOVE YOU, JESUS!!!” Run the Race – Holly StarrI’ve been jamming to this song for the last several months, but it’s been more than just a song I like. It’s been a driving force in remembering not to let circumstances weigh me down. I was made to run this race, and I’m going to run it to win the prize, for which God has called me Heavenward. The Wild Ones – Rachael LampaI’m a wild one. Always have been. Not wild in the sense of lacking common sense (I hope), but I certainly have been called to be wild and free in Christ. Wild ones are often misunderstood and misrepresented, so if you’re one too, I suggest you go take a listen. Rising – Wheels of Glory!Ok, so I’m shamelessly promoting my own band’s music here, but it’s a great song and it’s been a defining song for me this year as well. We are rising above our circumstances, rising just like the sun to shine again. (An official version of this might be coming out in the near future…stay tuned). Take You At Your Word – Cody CarnesWhen life comes crashing down around your ears, sometimes, you just have to cling to God’s word. It’s easy to doubt in those moments…“Did God really say that???” But I found that when I took Him at His word, not only did it create faith, it also gave me much-needed peace. What are some songs that defined 2023 for you? Drop a comment and let me know!
